The next show I did was Tommy Hilfiger womenswear on Sunday night. Read the review here and below.

Tommy Hilfiger Fall 2012 womenswear show

The fact that Anna Wintour slinking through backstage with her bodyguard was my personal highlight of Sunday night’s show tells its own story. That’s not to say the collection wasn’t lovely. It’s just that I expected it to hit the heights of Hilfiger’s Spring 2012 collection, seen on guests Louise Roe and MIC’s Amber Atherton amongst others, and it didn’t quite make it.

Set in that same starry garden (supposedly Central Park) to Lana Del Rey’s melancholic tones;  the collection had the same equestrian inspiration, militaristic tailoring, heavy use of leather, fur trimmings and colour palette as Friday’s menswear show. But that was where the similarities ended. Rather than making the ‘Wallis Simpson’ version of the ‘Duke of Windsor’ menswear; 1960s silhouettes were revived with fitted shifts/pinafores, boxy suits and oversized buttons. The horsey theme was taken too literally at times by the riding jackets and hats, the bridle printed scarf dresses, and the low ponytails the models’ hair was teased into. Unexpected statement pieces were the loafer boots (knee-high boots with loafer trimmings), the printed cable knit dresses, the striped and quilted double thigh-split skirts and the two-tone leather gloves. Another emerging trend for Fall 2012 seen here was red, navy and white tweed which was looked the best in the sharp suit that nipped in Jourdan Dunn’s figure so expertly.

Although there were signs of experimentation, the collection seemed dated but understandably safe and it should be commercially successful . Hilifiger spoke to his target audience- the ‘Park Avenue Princesses’ and this ‘Town and Country’ collection provides perfect looks for their Hampton’s winter breaks. There were definitely pieces that were perfect for Anna Wintour so Hilfiger would have  pleased the harshest critic of all regardless.
